Rules of the Game

Kavet 'm eus is a math game which improves all calculation skills ! The winner is whoever collects the most cards at the end of the game thanks to his calculations. The final score is made when the stock pile runs out and when no further calculation is possible with the remaining cards. Each card is worth one point. Thanks to Kavet 'm eus you will improve unconsciously whole number skills and you will really enjoy maths.

Rule number one : Match level !

Each player must match the level of the weakest player. Young mathematicians should not be disturbed ! If a player counts from one to ten, the cards from eleven to twenty are removed. If a player can only do additions and subtractions, so all the other players are limited to those operations.

Set up and Start

Shuffle the cards and put them face-down on the play deck pile. The first player draws three cards from the stock pile and puts the face-up in the middle of the table. If he can do an arithmetic operation with the three cards, he expresses the formula and lays out the result on the table.

For example, for the cards 8  13  5, he will use the arithmetic operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, equal to) : plus is equal to 13. The calculation is correct, so the player picks three cards required to his operation. Then he draws three other cards and keeps on playing as long as he has a lucky hand. When the player cannot do any more operations, he says : Nothing to Do ! Then the next player turns over one more card from the stockpile and also tries to use the numbers on the table and find an arithmetic operation.

If he does, he picks up the cards necessary to his operation and picks up 1 card from the stock (if there are two cards or more left after his operation), or 2 cards (if there is only 1 card left), 3 cards (if the lucky player picked all the cards after his operation). There are no limits to the number of cards picked up. As long as it is impossible to do any operation, the successive players keep on adding extra cards from the stockpile.

Kavet 'm eus

If a player does not pay attention and misses an operation or if his calculation is wrong, any other player can counter attack and say : Kavet 'm eus and announce a valid operation. Doing so, he wins the cards necessary to his calculation and takes the hand as long as he can carry on operations. Then he skips his turn. The game continues where it has been interrupted by Kavet 'm eus. The unlucky player will miss a turn. Warning !: If a player mistakenly states Kavet 'm eus and cannot do any valid operation, he has to give three cards from his own stock of cards to the player he has interrupted. The game can continue where it has been stopped by Kavet 'm eus. The hurried player has to miss a turn.

Special Cards

Cards X : A card X stands for a joker : it represents any number value. The player who picks the card X has to precise its value when he does his operation. If the operation is right he can take all the cards on the table. If he is wrong he risks the Kavet 'm eus !

Unan  Daou  Tri  Pevar  Pemp  C'hwec'h

Each of these 6 cards shuffled with the others refers to the Breton figures from 1 to 6 : Unan, Daou, Tri, Pevar, Pemp, C'hwec'h. The player picks the card and immediately draws another to keep the game going. He plays the card Event according to the instructions.

UNAN : The remainder of the cards at the end of the game is yours !

At the end of the game, if one or more cards are left and useless to do any further operation they are yours! You keep UNAN face up next to you and you use it at the end of the game. UNAN then joins your stack of cards -with or without the remaining cards.

DAOU : Gift to your right-hand neighbour: one of your next trick is for him. You decide which trick. Meanwhile, you keep DAOU face up next to you  !

When the time has come to play for your neighbour , you add DAOU on your stock pile but you give the trick you have just won to your neighbour with a broad smile.

Warning ! DAOU must be played before the end of the game, if not you owe 5 cards to your right neighbour at the final scoring !

TRI : you draw 1 card from the stock piles of each adversary and you play them whenever you want. You can play them one by one, more or all of them. Keep them well in sight – Maybe you can fan them out ?

TRI card is not worth an «  X » but can expand your trick !

The cards taken from your adversaries , as well as the card TRI join your stack of cards at the end of the game if you didn’t play them during the game!

PEVAR : one of your trick counts double !

You keep PEVAR face up in front of you and you cover it with the trick of your choice. You keep this treasure well apart and decide which providential multiplication you choose at the final scoring. If you forget… too bad for you…! But PEVAR still joins your pile of cards at the end of the game!

PEMP: one of your trick is worth half its value

You keep PEMP face-up in front of you and you cover it with the trick which will be worth half its value. You decide which one – but the result of this trick must be divisible by 2 to give a whole number !

Warning ! If you forget to use PEMP, you give 2 cards of your stock pile to each player at the end of the game – even if you discover PEMP only at the end of the game..

C’HWEC’H: The second chance

You are also, of course, allowed to make mistakes ! You can use C’HWEC’H to counter attack any player who rightly says «Kavet ‘m eus» against you and before he announces the correct solution. The counter is then reset to zero: you restart your calculation and take the cards you have won as well as C’HWEC’H. But if you use C’HWEC’H without finding the correct solution, you give C’HWEC’H to the player who has found the right operation !

If not, C’HWEC’H joins your stock of cards at the end of the game if it has not been used.
